Dear Sir David King,
It's too late for repairs. You can't fix a sinking ship anymore. Science has had thirty years to figure out safe solutions. Your time has run out. Continuing now on the current course of competitive innovation only intensifies the shipwreck. So please come up with a different song/story. The engines should be totally shut down.
If the captain (and his engineers) of the SS Titanic had shut down the engines the moment the captain of the SS Californian urgently advised him to do so that night, there would have been no sinking. Remember Gallipoli 1915 and Arnhem 1944.
Now also: the only way out from overheating (and the collapse of the earth's habitability) is extreme economic Degrowth i.e..shut down all aviation, internet, superfluous traffic and shipping; and start producing food, care, housing, and essential utensils much more manually and much more locally. Hands and hearts, Sir David, and less FTSE-oriented brainiacs.
